[break/] Fuck Lights Dear Readers, I had the opportunity Monday night to observe the 2000-year-old Perseids meteor shower with Janelle at Beaver Creek. Watching the shower was an annual event when I was a child, but something that I haven’t done in years. While I do plan to watch it again next year, it will not be done from Beaver Creek. The unfortunate reason for this change is the hideous light pollution from the inverted tepee lights emanating from the Dakota Dunes Casino. I recall a great deal of debate when the lights were first installed, but have heard nothing since. Aside from conjuring up images of the gaudy Las Vegas strip (we want this why?), I can see absolutely no value in keeping the lights. At the very least, they should be turned off during important astronomical events such as the majestic Perseids. Peace & Love, J. S. Buchanan Sunday 01 June 2008 - 20:38:17 The Yaris Chronicles Dear Readers, My Thursday featured three games of bowling with Ehren, Elaine, Bromwyn, Nate, and Sonya. The average scores over the three games are as follows: Ehren – 135 Jae – 117 Elaine – 101 Bromwyn – 94 Nathan – 67 Sonya – 54 After bowling, we went to Nate’s house to party. My Oldsmobile has been in the shop since Wednesday morning, and I’ve been driving a rented (SGI paid for it) 2008 Pontiac G6. It had bells and whistles and power to boot, but the seats were uncomfortable, and the back end was almost too high to see over when backing up. I enjoyed it, nevertheless. Anyway, I got the Olds back this afternoon and promptly drove it to Regina for Patrick Button’s Capture the Flag and Birthday Kegger. A good time was had. Regina is far away. Driving home from Regina in the dark by myself is lonely. You should come next time. I got an e-mail from Scott Dunbar at Ens Toyota today stating that the S.S. Captain Elcid Barrett will be ready late next week. I hate waiting. If the world ended tomorrow I’d die without my Yaris. In other news, I checked with my magic 8-ball mere moments ago and, after intense questioning, it revealed that my love life will soon pick up, with “The One” to be found this year. Excitement! Inspired by Janelle Wishlow, whom I recently rediscovered via Facebook (we were in cadets together during the early part of the decade), and who has a rockin’ YouTube Channel, I have decided to start a video blog on YouTube. I’m gonna rig up my tripod in the front seat of Barrett, and film my rants as I drive around. It’ll be called “The Yaris Chronicles”. Great success! Peace & Love, J. S. It had an intensely bright white tail and glowed red and orange. It streaked across the western sky for a few seconds, and was then consumed in a dazzling red flash. Amazing. Peace & Love, J. S. Buchanan Tuesday 27 May 2008 - 02:04:48 Birch Hills and other Delights Dear Readers, My Friday began at 0645 when I hit the road and headed north on Hwy. 11. My first stop was in Rosthern to find a Co-op for snacks. I was unable to find a Co-op, so I continued on to Duck Lake, where I was also unable to find a Co-op. I was hungry, so I stopped at a First Nations-run gas bar and bought some grape juice and some two-bite brownies. From there I went to the St. Laurent Ferry, which crosses the South Saskatchewan River just north of Batoche. I then travelled along Hwy. 782 to St. Louis on my way to the Fenton Ferry off Hwy. 25, which ended up being closed due to low water levels. This was fortunate, as it caused me to head to Birch hills for food. While in Birch Hills, I spoke to two potential employers, and stopped in at the local real estate agency. It should be noted that the Birch Hills Co-op is brand new, and was full of attractive women. Following Birch Hills, I took Hwy. 3 to the Muskoday First Nation, where I stopped for snacks, and then on to Prince Albert, where I crossed the Cecil Ferry. I did some shopping in Prince Albert, and then stopped in at the Legion for some diet cola. While there, I was presented with a lapel pin and a pen. I then met-up with Jesse Greenwood, and we went for supper at Burger King. I then headed home. After showering, I was prompted to pick up Ehren, Bromwyn, Elaine, and new friends Mariah and Rianne from Aden Bowman Collegiate Institute’s Castle Theatre, and transport everyone to the Grasswood Park Smitty’s, where we found Nathan, Sonya, and Patrick Button. A good time was had by all. Last night’s events included dressing up in formalwear, and eating at Grasswood, followed by a brief campus adventure. Peace & Love, J. S. Buchanan Sunday 25 May 2008 - 21:26:19 The S.S. Captain Elcid Barrett Dear Readers, This is totally a boredom post. It’s 0145, I’m not sleepy, and my Facebook account is inaccessible due to site maintenance. I’m about 75% done cleaning off the card table in my bedroom, which was a project that I had planned for yesterday, but never got around to. My Yaris, hereinafter referred to as “The S.S. Captain Elcid Barrett”, “Captain Barrett”, “The Captain”, or “Barrett”, will arrive in Saskatoon on or around the 26th, which is next Monday. The Captain has to stay at the dealership for several days for “pre-delivery” (whatever that is) and to have all the accessories I requested installed. I’ve lost sleep over the excitement, and now I am getting annoyed at the slow passage of time. My Oldsmobile, which I once loved greatly, is now a focus for contempt. If I had known in the beginning how many thousands of dollars I’d have to dump into it just to keep it running, I never would have bought it. It was almost a gift (my cousin sold it to me for $2K, when it was worth over $5K), so I can’t be too crabby, but still... I’ve asked that The Captain come with an iPod Interface, which was an extra $382. This will allow me to hook the iPod right into Barrett’s dash, which it totally awesome. The only problem lies in the fact that I can’t put any more music in my iPod, because my computer is fucked. By fucked I mean that I moved my default music folder and messed around with some settings that I had no business playing with, and now iTunes can’t find the iTunes folder. I know exactly where it is, but iTunes can’t seem to figure it out. This problem is deeply vexing, almost to the point of inducing depression. Another computer problem is that mine is teeming with viruses. Internet Explorer is virtually unusable because of a fraudulent virus warning, which prompts me to download what is almost certainly a virus any time I click anything. I paid for and downloaded an anti-spyware program, but I think that might be a virus, too. Yeah, I bought a virus. I’m a fucking moron. I’m having Nate take a look on the weekend to see if there’s anything he can do. Britt is confident that Nate can fix it, which is comforting. Nate is working on a computer science degree, so I’m sure he knows what he’s doing. My Facebook account is back up, so I’ll end this post now. Peace & Love, J. S.
